What Is an LV Authorised Person?
An Electrical Authorised Person is normally someone formally appointed by an organisation to undertake defined electrical duties within an established safe system of work.
Depending on the organisation and electrical safety rules, those duties may include controlling access to electrical systems, arranging isolations, issuing or cancelling safety documents, supervising work, controlling contractors, undertaking switching and ensuring electrical systems are returned to service safely.

What Does Low Voltage – LV – Actually Mean?
The term Low Voltage can be misleading because the voltages involved are still capable of causing fatal electric shock, burns, arc-related injury, fire and serious equipment damage.
Within the UK electrical standards framework, Low Voltage normally means a voltage above Extra-Low Voltage but not exceeding 1,000 volts AC or 1,500 volts DC between conductors.
BS 7671 – the IET Wiring Regulations – principally addresses electrical installations within this Low Voltage range, including the 230/400 V systems commonly found within commercial buildings, industrial premises, airports, healthcare estates and other workplaces.
The term therefore does not mean that an installation is low-risk. Effective electrical safety management, isolation, competence and controlled working procedures remain essential.

Training Supports Authorisation – It Does Not Replace It
Completing an LV Authorised Person course does not automatically make somebody an Authorised Person for every electrical installation.
Authorisation should be a formal organisational appointment based on the person’s training, technical knowledge, experience, understanding of the particular installation, local safety rules and the duties they are expected to perform.
